Pre-Election Liberia Protests Turn Violent

6:41AM MONROVIA, Liberia — Hundreds of protesters clashed with the police and United Nations peacekeepers here in the Liberian capital on Monday afternoon, leaving at least one person dead the day before a presidential runoff that the opposition has vowed to boycott. Businesses shuttered and pedestrians fled the streets as United Nations armored vehicles roared down Tubman Boulevard, Monrovia’s main artery. A running battle developed outside the headquarters of the chief opposition party, pitting its supporters against peacekeepers and Liberian security forces, who fired tear gas and live rounds.

3:28AM On August 3, 2011, in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Electoral District 3, aguement break between the supporters (motorcyclists,etc) of the aspirants of the Unity Party while in the hall during their primary. This haapened when one of the aspirant (Mr. Albert Saah) said that the process was unfair. Mr. Albert Saah who was defented by Mrs. Elizabeth Bawon said that the National Election Commission body was occupied by the relatives and friends of Mrs. Bawon.
Fight Among Unity Partisans

3:23AM On August 1, 2011 at 7:00pm in Bopolu city, Gbarpolu County at the Unity Party Headquarters, it was observed that an uprised of violence among Unity Partisans which stimulated to a forty-five minute hands fight. The cause of the figh was, why perference should be given to one group for the use of the party motorbike. Therefore, the accused is in police costidy while the matter is under police investigation. According to the police traffic control officer who served as one of the key eye witnesses in an interview with him, he said one of the partisans remained a victim and hospitalized on the same day.

3:08AM ON July 16, 2011 in Beeplay, Bu-yao District, Nimba County, there was an outbreak of violence involving about 300 supporters of two opposing independent candidates, Dr. Peter Wortuah and Philip Toweah all of Bu-yao District #5, Nimba County. According to an eye witness, fighting erupted between the opposing parties when supporters of Toweah accused Dr. Wortuah for illegally being in possession of their land which he constructed a hospital while on the other hand Toweah was prevented from conducting campaign activities. Meanwhile, the community is calm but more than six persons sustained minor injuries during the incident.
