Reports from Liberia say a presidential security guard has been shot dead in the northeastern city of Ganta.

Local media reports say the body of one of the security agents of the presidential Special Security Service (SSS), George Williams was discovered Friday night with bullet wounds at a presidential residence.

It happened just hours before President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf was due to visit the area on her campaign trail.

The reports say it’s so far not known whether the presidential guard committed suicide or he was shot by an attacker.

One report in Liberia’s Daily Observer newspaper today says President Johnson-Sirleaf has cancelled her campaign trip to that northeastern city.

The violent death of the Liberian presidential guard comes amidst tension and mounting concerns about potential violence in next month’s presidential elections.
