8000 Security Officers Hired For The General Elections

Malawi Electoral Commission has hired 8000 officers from the Malawi Police and Malawi Army to ensure security of voters, ballot papers and the voters roll in all the polling stations.
Elections Chief Officer David Bandawe disclosed today during a meeting between political parties and Malawi Electoral Commission on the update of the cleaning up of the voters register held in Blantyre at Comesa Hall.
Bandawe was responding to remarks made by Malawi Congress Party director of elections Joseph Njobvuyalema who alleged that MEC has hired impersonators who will be posing as police officer.
“I would like to have an assurance from MEC because I have strong information that MEC has hired police impersonators,” Njobvuyalema alleged.
Bandawe blushed aside the allegations saying they have hired 5000 police officers and 3000 army officers who will be responsible to ensure security at all the 4000 polling stations.
He said the police could not provide all the 80000 needed security officers hence the need to top up with 3000 army officers.
“Each polling station will have two officers and these officers will be deployed between today and tomorrow,” Bandawe said.
He however said provisions have been made for the officers on duty to vote wherever they will be stationed.
