Sao Tome and Principe: Second Round of voting on Sunday 7th, August

Campaigns for the second round of presidential elections will officially come to an end today to make way for elections on Sunday.

The decider will be between Evaristo Carvalho of the ADI and Manuel Pinto da Costa an Independent candidate and the archipelago’s first president after independence from Portugal. Whiles both candidates have expressed confidence in winning the polls, it still stands that the choice of who ascends the country’s leadership on September 3rd still lies with the electorate.

Sao Tome and Principe went to the polls on July 17th to choose a president out of 10 candidates, but at the end of polls; Pinto da Costa polled 35.85% and Evaristo Carvalho polled 21.82% plunging both candidates into a second round to decide on a clear winner.

Over 900,000 voters are expected to cast their votes though a majority boycotted the first round. Pinto da Costa is expected to vote near his home in the village of Slipper and Evaristo Carvalho will vote in the school, D. Maria de Jesus.
