Tunisia Ready for October 23rd Elections

Tunisia's foreign minister, Mouldi Kefi, has expressed hope in an Associated Press interview that his government is ready for the Oct. 23rd Constituent Assembly elections.

This election will be the first since the ousting of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, in January, a situation that launched the Arab Spring uprisings.

According to Eurasiareview, roughly, a total of 7 million Tunisians are eligible to vote on October 23rd, but only 3.64 million voters have registered. Meanwhile, the number of licensed poilitical parties is now one hundred and one (111). More than 11,000 candidates have nominated themselves for the Constituent Assembly elections, as they will be competing for only 217 seats, more than 50 candidates would compete for each seat.

Campaigning is set to begin October 1st and more than 100 political parties are expected to feature in this year’s elections.

Meanwhile Amnesty International has tasked all candidates in Tunisia’s elections to sign a “manifesto” with 10 pledges to signal that they are serious about meaningful human rights reform.

Canada and the EU will send observers to monitor the different phases of Tunisia’s elections next month.
