Kenya: Biometric Voter Registration Commences
Electronic voter registration for the 2013 general election began today in Nairobi, 19th of November and ends on 19th of December.
According to the independent electoral and boundaries commission, the dispatch process of the BVR kits to the regions and the training process delayed the registration further. The commission has identified 25,000 registration centers which are set to be gazette by the end of the week. The 15,000 BVR kits will be rotated in the 25,000 centers over the thirty day registration period.
President Mwai Kibaki has warned that anybody who tries to disrupt the voter registration exercise will face the full force of the law. At the official launch of the biometric voter registration exercise in Nairobi, the Justice Minister Eugene Wamalwa however reminded the president of a petition seeking the suspension of forceful disarmament in areas experiencing insecurity.
The independent electoral and boundaries commission is however upbeat, promising to enlist all the targeted 18 million voters in the next thirty days.
