Kenya : Race to the Presidency begins with Candidates Nomination
As part of preparation for the March 4 Kenya general elections, Political Parties will today nominate candidates for political positions including MPs, Governors and Senators.
In total, each party will be required by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to submit 1882 names representing those who will vie for various positions including Members of Parliament, Governors, senators, women representatives among others. The list is usually required to represent a balance in various aspects including gender, marginalized communities and the youth.
In the wake of events, Security has been heightened across the country ahead of the nominations, especially in areas that have been identified as hotspots.
According to the Inspector General of Police, David Kimaiyo, the police will use today's exercise as a litmus test of how they will handle the upcoming elections recounting attacks on the Police after the 2007/8 post-election violence for failing to contain the violence that left more than 1000 people dead.
The Kenyan government has ordered all public schools closed so that schools can be used as polling stations for the parties.
