African Elections Project To Cover Niger 2011 Presidential And Parliamentary Elections
Niamey Niger, 29th December 2010, The African Elections Project (AEP) http://www.africanelections.org/niger will be covering the Niger general election, taking place on Monday 31st January 2011 to elect a president out of the 10 candidates and 113 members of parliament. AEP was established in 2008 to empower journalists to cover elections using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) across the continent. AEP have successfully covered elections in Botswana, Namibia, Ghana, Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire,Mauritania, Mozambique, Malawi, and Togo. 
Plans are also far advanced to cover Nigeria, Liberia, Uganda and Cameroon.

The AEP team launched the AEP-Niger project today in Niamey at a training meeting with selected journalists in Niger. According to Kwami Ahiabenu, II Team Leader for African Elections Project “Niger brings to a total of ten countries covered by African Elections Project and we are working around the clock to ensure our project contributes to a better elections in Niger through working with journalists, media houses and key elections stakeholders through the provision of independent information and impartial coverage using ICTs .


In addition to its flagship online portal, http://www.africanelections.org/niger   AEP is covering this elections using other new media tools such as facebook, blogs, frontlineSMS and twitter http://twitter.com/nigerelections. The African Elections Project-Niger is coordinated by Ghana based International Institute for ICT Journalism (www.penplusbytes.org ) working hand in hand with la Maison de la Presse du Niger and other key partners. The Open Society Initiative for West Africa www.osiwa.org is the main strategic and funding partner for AEP project in Niger.
